The Organic Traffic Opportunity

There are 60,000 searches every single second on Google. Only about the first 3 to 5 results are paid ads, while the rest are essentially up for grabs. So, to drive organic traffic to your Shopify store for free, you’ll need to up your SEO game. In other words, you want to grab that slice of free traffic.

You may have gone through many trials and errors while trying to get free organic traffic to your store. We’ll show you 2 simple things you can do to drive that traffic to your store – for free. Even if you’re just looking for ‘how to drive traffic to a beat store!’

SEO Page Titles And Meta Descriptions

Page Title

You’ve probably heard the term page title and meta description at one point or the other. But did you realise that they are a simple and easy avenue and a free traffic source for Shopify (or any online selling platform)? It’s probably the cheapest way to drive traffic to a website. Wow, talk about the benefits of organic traffic!

For Instance, if you Google, ‘Luxury candles’ you’ll see many results come up. Have a look at this example, where it shows ‘best large soy scented online buy’. This is a GREAT  example of what a page title should look like. It includes so many combinations of the phrases that people actually search for. For example, best luxury candles, scented luxury candles, buy soy candles online, so many combinations with 1 clever page title!

SEO Page Title and Meta Description

So, your page title should be more than just the name of your product or store section. Just keep it short, the ideal SEO Page Title length is about 50 – 70 characters.

Remember, if you’re a small business, your business name or brand name is less important than the keywords and phrases that your buyers are using. So try to resist the urge to make your brand name the core focus of the title.

Meta-Description

Going back to the search results for luxury candles, you’ll find the meta description right underneath the page title. The meta description is primarily there to explain, in greater detail, what the page (in your case, your product) is all about.

Again, utilising the keywords from the industry your customers are looking for is very essential because these keywords help your products come up in the right searches. So, always include your product keywords in your meta-descriptions. It works as a perfect magnet to get your ideal customers right in your online store and checking out your products.

For example, if your store is in the jewelry industry, a good example of a meta description for jewelry is “Discover our collection of silver jewelry to add a sophisticated touch to your style. Discover sterling silver & silver plated necklaces for women…”

Call To Action

Your product title should also include a ‘call to action’, such as buy now, show now and sign up now. ‘Call to Actions’ have a way of registering a message in the mind of your customers that they actually need to click on your product and buy.

However, the mistake most entrepreneurs and small business owners make with Shopify SEO is that they insert keywords that are about their business in their page titles and meta descriptions. They also include technical names that do not appeal to nor make sense to their ideal customers in their page titles and product descriptions.

Some other business owners do not even include meta descriptions and are less likely to have any organic traffic coming their way. People ask us all the time, ‘Does meta description affect SEO’, our answer is, Yes!

Take a look at a vivid example of what a bad page title looks like – this is the search engine listing preview.

Now, this example doesn’t carry keywords that potential customers may be looking for. Unfortunately, you’ll see so many entrepreneurs and brands failing to get more traffic to their stores because of mistakes like these.

As a takeaway tip for this section, go through your products’ page titles and meta descriptions again. See what keywords you have there and do a little Google search for your business and your brand and notice what comes up. Tip: Check out Google Search Console if you haven’t already, to find out what phrases your store is already starting to appear for. We’ll have more on how to get the most out of the Google Search console coming soon.

Product Listings For Organic Traffic

The second important way to optimise your website and drive organic traffic is to optimise your product listings. This optimisation includes the keywords you already used for each product’s title and their descriptions.

Common Product Listing Errors

Let’s look at an example of a bad product listing and why it won’t work for SEOs, especially if you want to learn how to drive traffic to your Shopify store for free.

Consider a product with the title, ‘Draped Mini Dress’. This title doesn’t give a customer any information about the product, and they’ll most likely never buy it. So, remember to write a product title that is more explicit and detailed with keywords that your customers are looking for. Hence, in addition to the title above, you can further explain the colour of the product, its shape, size, and other specifications customers may be looking out for.

Product listing that needs more work example

The second thing to tweak on your product listing to drive traffic to your Shopify store for free is to make the description of your product very detailed and clear. For the ‘Draped Mini Dress’, you can include descriptions like a short dress, a cocktail dress, a wonderful beautiful mini dress and so on. By doing so, you’re creating an emotional narrative around the product, and that is exactly what an ideal customer would be after.

You can include some technical specifications like, how the dress feels, what size it fits and any other detail a dress owner would want to have about their dresses.

A Good Example

Now, take a look at an example of an excellent product title that can drive organic traffic to your Shopify store. ‘Cotton Berber Washable Rug’. You can find relevant keywords (like ‘cotton’ and ‘washable’) – who doesn’t want to be able to clean their rug when it gets dirty? Use the phrases that customers may be looking for when they want to purchase a rug.

Looking at the description of this product, you’ll find keywords like, washing machine, information about the rug is produced and how the shipping is done, as well as care instructions that also incorporate essential keywords

You may think that this page is excessively stuffed with repetitive keywords. But keywords are the bedrock of your Ninja Pyramid, a key tool to driving more traffic to your online business.

Power Tip To Boost Your Organic Traffic

One last powerful thing you can do to drive organic traffic to your store for free is to optimise your product images. And optimizing your images means you’re using image titles and descriptions that fit right into what your customers are looking for.

So, are there images on your website? Do your images have the best, SEO descriptions? If they don’t, you might want to start working on them as soon as possible.

Let’s take a quick look at what using the right image titles and descriptions to drive free organic traffic to your store feels like. Now, let’s assume that you simply uploaded your product images with the image title ‘Image 1’. When someone (your potential customer, most likely) searches for Image 1, they’d find that a countless number of other images (unrelated to your store) have been uploaded with that title. What do you get at the end? Definitely not a new customer.

On the other hand, if you name your images the right way, for example, ‘yellow mini dress’, potential customers will be more likely to go to your store because that product image would pop up on their screen.

Easy, right?

Conclusion – More Organic Traffic Is Possible!

Driving a crazy fast organic traffic growth rate is possible and achievable when you put the right focus and effort into your store. Start to apply the guidelines above and you’ll start to notice the difference. Of course, it won’t happen overnight, but it will start to take effect gradually and build momentum.

Create your product page with a compelling title, and a meta description, apply the perfect product listing formula and use a well-optimised image name. You’ll be shocked at how much your free traffic will start to grow!
